Description The calculation determines AC fields in and near a 0.25 mm diameter iron sphere immersed in a uniform magnetic field of magnitude 1.0 mT oscillating at frequencies 60 Hz and 20 kHz. The calculation was performed with the Nelson component of the toolkit. See the file IronSphere.NIN for material parameters and calculated skin depth.
Results Results from the example Magnetized iron sphere: automating calculations were used to generate an applied field of amplitude 1.0 mT. Fine mesh zoning was applied to resolve skin depth effects in the sphere.
  • 60 Hz, almost complete field penetration, little difference from a static solution. Power dissipation: 8.487E-14 W, |Bz(0.0)| = 2.9962E-3 T.
  • 20.0 kHz, the field is largely excluded from the sphere. Power dissipation: 2.628E-9 W, |Bz(0,0)| = 1.4758E-4 T
Comments The geometry and parameters are adapted from these Comsol examples for comparison.
