Description The goal is to find the force between a permanent magnet assembly and a steel rod. The assembly consists of two permanent magnets connect by a steel bend. No section of the bend is saturated, so a fixed value of MuR provides a good first approximation. Force calculations were performed using the Maxwell stress tensor integrated over either the rod surface or a surrounding diagnostic box. A check was made using the principle of virtual work in a displaced solution.
Results Calculated forces using the Maxwell stress tensor
Surface of rod: 23.25 N
Surface of diagnostic box: 22.43 N

Calculated force using the virtual work method (0.1 cm displacement)
Field energy displaced 0.1 cm: 12.70812 J
Field energy original position: 12.68521 J
dU/dy = 22.91 N
Comments The geometry was based on a Comsol example. There are some questions about the practicality of the Comsol parameters and the accuracy of the calculated force.
