Description A benchmark Trak simulation, comparison with results reported in Siqi Li and Giulio Stancari, Characterization of an Electron Gun for Hollow Electron Beam Collimation, (FERMILAB-TM-2542-APC, 2012). The left side of the top figure is a diagram of the geometry from the report. An electron gun with an annular cathode has a 7.0 kV applied voltage and is immersed in a uniform 0.3 T magnetic field. The non-relativistic electron flow is space-charge limited.
Results The right side of top figure shows the measured values of total output current as a function of voltage. The blue line represents calculations using a code referred to as SAM. The Trak calculation was performed in the SCHARGE mode with an emission surface that covered the front face of the cathode. The geometry was reversed to conform to the standard convention. The middle figure shows trajectories of 58 model particles and self-consistent equipotential lines. The bottom figure replots the measurements of emitted current along with Trak results (red squares). The calculated results are close to the SAM simulations. As suggested in the report, the discrepancy with experimental results probably arises from misalignment of the gun electrodes.
Comments The report is included in the input file archive.
